Depa Group CEO Hamish Tyrwhitt was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Construction Week Awards held last night in Dubai. This prestigious award is a special presentation made to an individual who has given a lifetime of achievement to the construction industry. An independent panel of judges, comprising eight of the Middle East’s foremost construction experts, sought to recognise Hamish’s long list of achievements over his 30-year career in the global construction industry – not only with Depa Group and Arabtec Holding but also with the Leighton Group (now CIMIC Group).

Now in their 13th year, the Construction Week Awards are the foremost event celebrating the achievements of the region’s construction contractors. The awards seek to recognise and reward corporate prowess, project success, individual excellence, and the sector’s most forward-thinking initiatives.

“It’s a great honour to have received this award from Construction Week,” Hamish said.

“I very much view this as a team award and one that reflects and recognises the hard work and dedication of our more than 6,000 people across the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

“We should all be very proud that the industry has recognised our performance, and our continued commitment to our core values of professionalism and exceptional service,” he said.

Last week Depa Interiors secured two awards at the 2017 Big Project ME Awards held at the Habtoor Grand Hotel in Dubai.  The company won the Construction Project of the Year Award, for the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC) project in Saudi Arabia, and Commercial Director, Rob Davies, took home the Construction Professional of the Year Award.

Depa Interiors was also shortlisted for a number of other awards. The company was shortlisted for Specialist Contractor of the Year, and Commercial Manager, Drita Arnaout, was shortlisted for Female Construction Professional of the Year.

The judges were impressed with Depa’s work on one of the Group’s most challenging projects. KAPSARC was designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid and is characterized by its innovative modular honeycomb design. The formation of the five major buildings and 11 ancillary buildings allows for future adaption and the expansion of the research campus. The project presented some major challenges for the Depa Interiors team. Many of the interior design features included three components, a skeleton structure, a built-up layer, and a final finish. Many of the walls were at unusual angles, and windows and wall niches were of varying sizes and widths. Even with such geometric complexity Depa Interiors was able to execute an impressive 1,250 windows to exacting perfection.

“I’d like to congratulate everyone from Depa Interiors who were involved in the delivery of the project, particularly our team in Saudi Arabia,” Hamish said.

“A special mention should also go to Engineering Director Arif Jainul and his Engineering team who embraced BIM technology to address some of the major challenges on the project.

“Awards such as these are important for raising the Group’s profile with key clients, and for recognising the skills and hard work of our people,” he said.
